Diabetes and Workout Supplements…What Are The Recommendations?

Diabetes…the medical condition in which you experience abnormally high blood glucose levels because your body has trouble producing or using insulin.woman stretching

Per the American Diabetes Association you should limit saturated fat intake and keep sugar intake low, as that can rapidly increase your blood sugar levels.

As we all know, workout supplements contain both of these nutrients, so it is imperative that you choose carefully and make sure to consult your doctor before starting any new supplements.

Pre-Workout Supplements

Pre-workout supplements are typically powders that contain amino acids, creatine and caffeine.

If you have diabetes, you should use a caffeine-free pre-workout supplement, as caffeine may have a negative effect on your body’s ability to regulate glucose levels.

Protein Bars

Most protein bars are high in both saturated fat and sugars to compensate for the taste of the healthy ingredients.measuring waistline

There are some protein bars that are low-sugar and low-fat that may not significantly impact your blood glucose levels.

Doctor’s CarbRite Diet bars and Allmax Isofemme bars, which have 6 g or less of fat and 1 g or less of sugar per bar, may support weight lifting because they are high in protein.

Both bars use sugar alcohols, which provide fewer calories than sugar and don’t cause quick increases in your blood sugar levels.

Weight Gainer

Just as the name suggests, weight gainers are high-calorie, high-protein supplements that come in a powder form.

In order to increase the calorie content in weight gainers, many of them are full of sugar and fat.

As a diabetic you’ll need to look for a weight gainer that uses fiber, and has a low sugar and low fat content.

Cytosport Cytogainer contains only 7 g of sugar, 6 g of fat and 4 g of fiber in each 570-calorie serving.

Protein Powder

Protein powders tend to contain between 100 and 200 calories per serving, and offer primarily protein and much fewer grams of fat and carbohydrates than weight gainers.man running

Make sure to choose a whey protein isolate, a type of protein powder with very little fat and at least 90 percent protein per scoop.

This will save you from the added sugar and saturated fats other protein powders contain.

With 0g fat, 0g carbohydrates and 26g of protein per serving, Nature’s Best Isopure Whey Protein Isolate is definitely the cleanest protein out there.

Whey Protein Isolate by NOW Sports, is incredibly clean and all natural – two qualities that are crucial in finding the best protein powder for diabetics.

Thank you for reading!

  1. Short and to the point.  Before this post, it didn’t occur to me that people with diabetes couldn’t take certain workout supplements.

It makes sense that pre-workout supplements would have caffeine that would give the body some energy to get through the workout.  I don’t see the point of weight gainers except maybe for body builders who need to put on body mass.

Good info to know, especially if you’re a diabetic who likes to workout. 🙂

  2. Hi, Chris! It was useful to read it, and now I understand people who have diabetes better. They have some things to remember if they want to use supplements, protein bars, protein powders. It’s not easy.

I am lucky that I don’t have this kind of problem, but I try to use less sugar. In fact, I try to let go of sugar, and it isn’t easy, because I am a little bit addicted to sugar and sweets. But I am working on it.

Thank you for sharing this article! I believe that many people will find here the answers they need.

    • Hi Linda! I have the same problem with sugar and sweets, so I try to just stay away from them 😉

      Thanks! Chris:)

  3. Chris,

Diabetes runs in our family so this is a topic that I am very familiar with.  Sugar intake can cause many adverse side effects as well as low blood sugar and going into sugar shock.  Exercise can play a very important roll for a person with diabetes and knowing the proper supplements will be highly beneficial.  I think the way you have broken the products down with sugar contents making people aware that these protein bars they think are so good for them contain sugar in higher amounts than what most people would think of consuming being a diabetic.

Thank you the more people are aware the healthier they can stay,

  4. This is a nice informative article about systematizing exercise. Like you I for one always exercise without out protein supplements. I depend on bee pollen, honey, and wheat grass. This power food has loads of nutrients.

It is an excellent idea how you rely on yoga.
According to the ancient indian rishes(seers) yogic exercises like asanas are a more natural way to build a healthy strong body by bending the whole body slowly and not producing an excessive amount of lactic acid that modern workouts produce, which can be harmful to the body. This process will gradually eliminate toxins from food, air pollutants, chemical products, and so on.

The more one rids their body of these toxins, then prana(life force) can flow through the whole anatomical system giving one energy, strength, lustrous skin tone, enhance breathing, clarity of mind, and joy from a more harmonized physical system.

But it is good how you include ways of using supplements, because many people would not even consider yogic postures a real exercise. For this group weights, calisthenics and jogging is the only way to go. Besize they would love to build a more muscular body which can be further enhanced by protein supplements.

I think one reason why most people don’t drink enough water is, because it doesn’t have tantalyzing flavor like soda, juice, beer, and coffee to name a few. perhaps you can give them some insight on how to enjoy the taste of plain water.

I think what will establish your credibility on this site is how you supply details on how to scientifically build muscle mass and get proper nutrients to improve health.

It has always been known that a percentage of body builders use anabolic steroids, maybe you can give detail medical review on the danger of using steroids as opposed to the natural supplements you recommend. Thanks for teaching the world some interesting things.
