Are Workout Supplements Necessary? Some Say Yes, Some Say No

Pre-workout supplement, post-workout supplement, protein powders, creatine, potassium, magnesium, amino acids, BCAAs…the list goes on and on.

Are all, or even any, of these workout supplements necessary?

Just like there are varying levels of fitness, there are also varying levels of commitment to fitness.

From applying any additional time spent researching, to purchasing equipment that may be necessary, to the cost of any memberships and/or supplements, etc.

Workout Supplements Are A Must!!!

Some workout enthusiasts are of the belief that if you are going to workout then you HAVE to get your highest return, so you HAVE to use supplements.

What’s the point if you aren’t going all out, right?!

So these are the people that start off with a caffeine filled pre-workout supplement of some sort on their way out the door.

Then they follow that up with a protein drink before the workout begins.

During the workout there is sometimes an amino acid concoction being sipped on throughout the workout.

And then the post-workout drink comes.

Followed by another protein drink, or meal, of course.

It’s a constant intake of something or another…kind of wears you out if you aren’t completely committed to the whole supplement mindset.

I am just going out for my daily run with my dog.

I’m getting my morning 3 mile hike in.

Doing my routine yoga hour.

I have never used workout supplements before, I’m not going to start now.

There are those people who have worked out in some capacity for years and have never used a workout supplement before and have no desire to.

They don’t feel any need for them.

They are doing just fine with their personal gains, their fitness goals.

Or, maybe they had tried a workout supplement in the past and had an unpleasant experience.

That could have been the deciding factor for them.

Or…just the lack of knowledge about supplements may be why someone doesn’t partake in their use.

Another reason a person may not use workout supplements is per the advise of their healthcare provider.

Protein Please!

Protein PowderProtein powder is probably the most widely used workout supplement out there.

One, because it can be used as a calorie filler for the Average Joe (or Joan)…who may NOT even workout…what??!!

By that I mean, if you are in a hurry and you need to get something in your belly you can mix up a protein drink real quick and take it on the go.

For the more fitness nuts…protein powder is used as a filler quite often, as it would be pretty difficult to eat enough protein through food alone to get some of the desired results some of these guys and girls are working towards.

If you do your research and stick to the reputable brands of protein powders out there, you can keep your calories and sugars down, while getting a great dose of protein per serving.

All of that while not having to break the bank! Nice;)

Water… It Does A Body Good!

No matter what the fitness level.

No matter what the commitment level.

No matter what the knowledge base.

OneGlass of Water thing that EVERYONE must have isΒ WATER

Without sufficient water the body really suffers.

It shows in the skin’s appearance, in your physical performance, in how you feel physically, in how your brain functions.

Most people don’t consume enough water daily.

If you wait until you’re thirsty to drink…you’re already dehydrated!

It is recommended that you drink 8 – 8 ounce glasses of water per day, depending on your activity level and where you live.

So more if you’re active, and more if you live in a hot, humid climate; more if you live in a high elevation location.

Conclusion

Do you want a buzz during your workout?

Do you want a better pump?

How about just enjoying your hike through the woods with your dog?

Lots to consider huh?!!

Are workout supplements a must…?

It all depends on who you talk to, and what you’re trying to achieve.

But even further than that is how much, if any, do you want to spend on your fitness results?

One thing you cannot leave home without…so I say it is an absolute MUST…YOUR BOTTLE OF WATER πŸ˜‰

Thisbis actually true so many people don’t realize that they don’t need Wokeout supplements and they don’t understand the disadvantages it can cause to their body by using them before or after their workouts regularly. Thank you for delving more into the topic and explaining everything. Thank you so much for sharing it with us.

  2. Thank you with sharing with us this great post on workout supplements.We all need to do physical exercises to stay fit and to avoid early aging.After workout,our body seems to be weak because during workout,the body loses energy and we need to boost our body energy.

    According to my opinion,workout supplements are necessary to keep our body strong .We can’t forget taking water because water is life.

  3. I believe in workout supplements. I take supplements everyday. Going walking and bike riding either in the morning or afternoon, I need protein and I drink plenty of water.

    I agree with you that you can’t get everything you need through food alone.Protein is so important and I like my protein shakes.

    I want to make sure that I have what I need when working out.How much water do you feel is sufficient?

    • Hi Rob! There are so many different opinions of how much is enough water…

      Some still say 8- 8 ounce glasses a day, some say men should have 101 ounces a day…

      I personally drink A LOT of water! I am constantly drinking water. I drink at least 2 gallons of water per day, every day. And if I don’t for some reason get my water in me…I feel like sh**!!!!

      So…I would say the 8×8 rule is probably a good one to shoot for, unless you have a medical condition that would advise otherwise.

  4. Nice post! I  am one of the  fitness junkies that takes all the supplements! ( bodybuilder) Actually I only take protein, creatine, glutamine and BCAAs. Well, and a caffeine laced preworkout, of course! However, I concede that I could give these supplements up and still do well at the gym. I just prefer to know that my body is getting the building block it needs to maintain and increase muscle mass. I would also recommend checking with your doctor before taking anything is a good idea.

    It definitely is not necessary for most people to take supplements as long as their diet is providing all the necessary nutrients. Water, as you point out, is the most important of all!! Do you eat a pretty balanced diet? What do you think about a basic multivitamin? 

    • Hi Dave! Thanks for reading! I totally get it…I am a former bodybuilder (in my other life…lol!) I cannot do the caffeine laced preworkout supplements! Bad reactions!!

      I do keep my diet clean and balanced. And then when I do have a lapse (holiday feasting;)… I do a little diet hacking and some fasting to get back on track. Clear out the body, mind and soul a little:)

      Multivitamins are a must!

  5. It sounds like you have spent a lot of time in the gym and experimenting with supplements. I am 53yrs and starting to grow a bit of a ‘dad’ belly.  I have thought about walking in the hills, I want to get rid of the belly not develop hulk legs. What kind of supplement would you recommend for me?

    • Hi Robb! I know what you mean about things changing once the BIG 50 hits…ugghh!!!! I love my protein drinks…just keep your calories in check and you should be good. Make sure you bring your water with you on your walks! I do a lot of hikes in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains and they are no joke…even the “little” hills. 

      If you want add something after awhile, maybe try some amino acids. See what makes you feel good:)

  6. I don’t think that workout supplements are necessary although I know that people take supplements hoping for a range of health benefits, from weight loss to muscle building but the reality is that some supplements can be very harmful to our body so I think we should avoid it.

    Protein is an important part of our diet and It contains amino acids, the building blocks used for muscle growth. Protein powders, available as shakes, bars and capsules are legally available to buy over-the-counter and online but you could get the same benefits from high-protein foods and snacks. Great informative article, thanks for sharing.

Hey i really enjoyed this article, it was very informative.  I really need to start eating healthy and workout.  I have been slacking off so much and i do not like it.  You gave a lot of tips here to get someone on track!  I deff. need to drink a lot more water too, i dont think i get enough water and i deal with anxiety.
